Those of us who are fortunate enough to live in the Cotswolds would never consider going away from home for Christmas! The festive season is so delightful in this part of the world – those glowing quaint limestone cottages festooned with wreaths on every front door; fires blazing in homely hearths; and outdoors that fresh, crisp air that makes the countryside sparkle.
Cruising into Christmas
Being such a special English enclave, it’s no wonder that Santa chooses to make so many pre-Christmas appearances in our towns and villages! Did you know that he even takes to the water joining merry-makers on boat trips along the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal? While Santa hands out gifts to the children his reindeer Rudolph gets up to mischief at the Saul Junction Visitor Centre.
Click here for details of the Santa Cruises on board the Endeavour, which run during weekends right up to 22 December.
Winter Sports in Gloucester
Gloucester is our nearest city – less than 10 miles away, which is just a 20 minute drive. We love visiting Gloucester during the Christmas season because not only is the city dressed in its best, but there is so much to see and do.
We highly recommend Gloucester Quays for doing designer Christmas shopping in all those unbeatable outlet stores like Barbour, Jaeger, GAP, Osprey and so many more!
If you’ve still got energy left after shopping you can get your skates on in Orchard Square, where for the fourth year running Gloucester’s large open air ice rink is functioning through until 5 January. For all the info and to book tickets for a skating session (pre-booking is necessary because it’s so popular and the number of tickets is limited) visit the Gloucester Quays website.
If you want to take your winter sports even further, head out to the suburb of Matson on the B4073 and hit the (artificial) ski slopes. The Gloucester Ski and Snowboard Centre has a 255m long main slope, 40m nursery slope, a freestyle slope, tubing slope, button tow ski lifts and snowboard fun park. Who needs snow?
The Shambles for Shopping
Although we love a trip to the city, we particularly enjoy an expedition to The Shambles indoor/outdoor market just up the road in Stroud. Spread around the oldest part of the town this eclectic market is a marvel, especially at Christmas time when the traders go all-out to make the atmosphere magical.
It’s the perfect place to pick up unusual gifts, and to stock the larder with local specialities to see you through the holidays.
Here at Edgemoor Inn we have also pulled out all the stops to welcome visitors during this celebratory season, so make sure that when you’re exploring the Christmas cheer of the Cotswolds you seek us out near Painswick in our pretty village.
We’ve got a cosy pub with warming libations on offer, and a cracking festive menu for dinner which we’re serving throughout the month of December (up to Christmas Eve). As is usual with our menus, all dishes are home-cooked using local ingredients where possible. There’s also vegan, vegetarian and gluten free specialities, so there’s no excuse not to tuck in and enjoy our festive fare.
Eat, drink and be merry at the Edgemoor Inn and across the Cotswolds this yuletide! We wish you all a blessed Christmas and happy 2020.
