There’s one day of the week that we, and everyone who lives in or near Stroud, looks forward to – market day!

We are incredibly fortunate here in Edge to have easy access to this most magical of farmers’ markets, especially because it is the perfect place for us to stock up on all that delicious local fresh farm produce that we need to keep the menu here at the Inn traditional and tasty.

We set off bright and early on Saturday mornings for Stroud Farmers’ Market – one of the biggest, busiest and most popular of its kind in the UK. Every week there are around 50 stalls and a gathering of organic producers, selling a breath-taking variety of food and drink.

Proof of the Pudding

Being locals, you might think we are exaggerating the delights of this award-winning market (its twice won the accolade of Farmers’ Market of the Year), but – as they say – the proof of the pudding is in the eating, so we invite you come and visit us here in the Painswick Valley and include a visit to Stroud Market. If you want to sample the produce, you need go no further than to share a meal with us here at the Inn – we guarantee you’ll be inspired to go shopping yourself, so you can take a taste of the Cotswolds home with you.

It’s not only carrots and cabbages that you’ll find at our great market. There are plenty of stalls serving up a diverse array of goodies, from gluten-free bread and elderflower fruit cakes to Adeys Farm bacon and burgers and Day’s Cottage cider. Browsing the Stroud market is not quick – be prepared to take your time and soak up the atmosphere – there’s usually some busking going on and you can always take a break at the café.

Online Shopping

The fresh farm produce at Stroud Farmers’ Market may be good old-fashioned home-grown and home-made fare, but the market administrators have embraced the modern way of doing things and you can now order online from the market producers in advance of market day and have your purchases all packed up ready to collect from the Stroudco Food Hub, alongside the market.

This is a very useful service for visitors – you can browse the online market at your leisure from home and be sure your favourite choices are waiting for you when you get to our neck of the woods, all neatly packed into boxes. For locals it’s even more convenient because Stroudco delivers in the immediate area, so if we’re too busy to get to the market we can still stock up on all the lovely stuff we need to keep our diners happy all weekend.

Of course, even if you order ahead you are still well-advised to wander around the market to seek out all the surprises that you’re bound to find among the rich variety of local produce available from the farmers, growers and food producers in the Five Valleys.
